This training provides participants with the knowledge and skill set needed to professionally and ethically use or serve as an expert witness: benchmarks for establishing “expertise” before serving as or employing expert witnesses; and ethical, personal, and professional benefits of serving as, or utilizing, experts for case consultation and in the trial.
By the end of the training, participants will have learned:
To identify the legal basis for the ethical use of expert witnesses
To discuss the ethical obligations and the personal and professional benefits of utilizing experts in cases involving interpersonal violence.
To increase understanding of the context of interpersonal violence in court and criminal justice settings, Case examples will be utilized for discussion
To increase the ethical use of expert witness testimony in cases involving interpersonal violence.
To increase skills and knowledge in various roles, including criminal justice roles, around the viability of expert testimony in cases involving interpersonal violence.
To identify what judges find most effective in expert witness testimony.
